New law requires Puerto Ricans to get new birth certificates before July 1st

Were you born in Puerto Rico? If you were, you better read this. A legislation approved by the Puerto Rican Legislative Assembly invalidates all copies of certified Puerto Rico birth certificates issued before July 1, 2010, and prohibits the retention of certified certificates by public and private entities. This legislation is designed to reduce identity theft and passport fraud. Puerto Ricans born on the island will need to apply for new birth certificates for any official transactions requiring that document, such as requesting drivers licenses or getting new passports.
